Date: Sat, 1 Mar 1997 17:59:06 (EST) From: Brian Groce Subject: DePauw University (Greencastle, IN) Show I was at the Rich Mullins show at DePauw on Friday (Feb. 28). I just want to let everyone know that it was great. John David Webster opened for him. I know one of the guys that was playing w/ John David Webster because he goes to my church. Anyway, you'll see why I mentioned him in a second. Rich came out at about 8:20pm and looked like he had a bad day. His guitar didn't want to be in tune, so it seemed but the show went on. On the 2nd song he broke a string on his guitar and then decided to play the piano. Now Drew (the guy from church) comes into play. Mitch was going to try and fix Rich's guitar (at least that's what it looked like) and Drew was standing off stage with his guitar for Rich to use. After Rich did a few songs on the piano he took Drew's guitar and said "This is a nice one. I ought to break my strings more often." Needless to say Rich played the guitar the rest of the night and the whole show was up hill from there! Rich got into the story telling mode and it was great. On Awesome God everyone starting singing. Rich got a standing ovation and his face lit up. He also did a cool rain sounding audience participating thing. On the encore he came out w/ Mitch and John David Webster and sang that song that goes "I'm going to sing, sing, sing...." and it was awesome. (If anyone knows the name of that song let me know.) All in all it was a great show. Brian Groce blgroce@iupui.edu

From: Kathie Scott Subject: Re: Missionary Trip Date: Sun, 18 May 1997 22:28:48 (CDT) Hey, Danl! I did get to see Rich at Greencastle on February 28th. It was an unusual concert, to say the least. The opening act, John David Webster, I believe, was excellent. Rich & Mitch seemed a little "off" that night. I'm a musician, so I'm more critical than others might be, but they were never quite together during the first couple of songs. They were really cool about it, though, & didn't get all stressed , but just had fun. Rich finally went to the piano (which is what I prefer to hear him play). While playing "Sing Your Praise..." during the bridge, he missed a chord, so he tired it again, and then on the 3rd time he got it....then went on with the song. Kind of reminded me my old piano recitals! Actually, there were a few missed notes here & there as well. Rich did comment that we couldn't believe the day they had had. I was glad that he did "Elijah" as that song has become much more meaningful since Dad died. Rich said that he doesn't do it very often because it's a special song. Mitch got to do a couple of songs as well. I really liked one about sittin' up in heaven drinkin' lemonade. Rich didn't share a whole lot. He did comment at one point that the Bible says money is the root of all evil, which annoyed me. People are always mis-quoting that scripture. It's the LOVE of money. He also made some negative comments about marriage. After the concert, a young man asked for his autograph for his fiance'. He told Rich that he was getting married next month. Rich sounded shocked when he asked, "WHY???????" Then he told them to have lots of kids. Once again I have a goofy autograph story. Last year when I got his autograph after a concert, he would only sign one item. So I gave a CD insert for my friend Mary to have him sign, and I took my 45rpm of Elijah. Mary gave him the CD insert first, and Rich asked her name. Since it was mine, she said, "Kathie." He then asked her how to spell it. She misspelled my name 3 times, and I had to help her. Rich looked at us like we were absolutely nuts. It was pretty funny. I had to confess that it was mine & she was getting it signed for me. I then gave him the record to sign. He looked at it, said, "Where in the world did you get this?" I told him it was a long story. He looked at it closer and said, "It says 'NOT FOR SALE' here. " I think he was trying to make a joke about my having illegally bought it (but it was given to me.) I took Rich's picture with Mary's 8 year old, Jessica. He looked a little scruffy that night - tired & unshaven. He's really got a lot of gray hair up close (a streak in the back on the left, and quite a bit in his beard.) My friend Mary commented that he looked pretty rough, and why hadn't he even shaved? (I guess us die-hard Rich fans are a little more tolerant of his unconventional ways). It was a good concert, but I sure would like to hear Rich with the whole Ragamuffin band sometime. Hope the next tour brings them to my area when I can go! Take care! And keep up the good work on the mailing list! We die-hard Rich fans certainly appreciate it! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kathie Scott csmks@eiu.edu Charleston, IL We are frail, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. -- Rich Mullins ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
